2. Could you describe the booklet course?

Our 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement booklet program (like all other BDI courses) is timed, as required by the Florida DHSMV. You simply call the toll-free number listed in your course materials (or login to our website) at the beginning and end of each chapter to verify that your time requirements have been fulfilled and answer a VALIDATION INSERT question. Telephone agents are available 7 days a week, from 8 am to midnight (Eastern). Internet verification is available 24/7. After you read the materials and pass the FINAL EXAM, we’ll send you a COMPLETION CERTIFICATE to present to court officials. The whole process is straightforward and painless!

The booklet is divided into 5 chapters, each with a minimum required reading time. The total minimum reading time for the booklet is 4 hours, as required by the Florida DHSMV.

4. Do I have to finish reading the book all at once?

No, you may take as long as you want to finish. You may read one chapter after another if you wish (don’t forget to START and STOP your timer for each chapter!), but most of our students read at their leisure—maybe a chapter or two a day. Fit the book into your schedule—whatever works for you.

6. What if I have a question about something?

Easy-to-follow instructions are included inside the booklet at the beginning and end of each chapter. Don’t worry—we prompt you on how to proceed through the course with clear and simple directions. You can also call the toll-free number listed in your course materials to speak with one of our Customer Service Representatives.

7. Why is there a timer?

It’s the law! The Florida DHSMV requires that all BDI courses—classroom, Internet, video, and booklet—have a minimum required completion time of 4 hours. But don’t worry—the timer is easy to use! At the beginning and end of each chapter, you START and STOP the course timer by making a toll-free phone call to the number listed in your course materials or by logging in at http://www.trafficschoolbook.com/. You’ll receive reading time credit if the required time has elapsed and if you correctly answer a VALIDATION INSERT question.

8. How do I START and STOP the timer?

Don’t worry—it’s fast and simple! Before you begin reading each chapter you must START your course timer by either calling the toll-free telephone number listed in your course materials or logging on to http://www.trafficschoolbook.com/. When you finish reading the chapter, you must call or login to STOP the timer. If you do not START and STOP the timer, you will not receive credit for your reading.

11. I tried to STOP the timer after I finished reading the chapter and was told I didn’t spend enough time reading. What should I do?

12. Can I STOP the timer in the middle of a chapter and continue later?

No. You must STOP your course timer only at the end of a chapter and you must START your course timer only at the beginning of a chapter. Please call the toll-free number listed in your course materials if you have any questions.

13. What is a VALIDATION INSERT?

A VALIDATION INSERT is a short sentence that has nothing to do with driving and traffic safety (for example, “The lifespan of a tastebud is ten days.”). You must answer questions about them correctly to receive credit for your reading time. There are 45 of these sentences “hidden in plain sight” throughout the booklet. They are very easy to find—but only if you read the booklet carefully, word-for-word. This guarantees that even a traffic safety expert must read the entire booklet to pass the course. We suggest that you highlight them so you can find them again easily.

14. I’m having trouble remembering the VALIDATION INSERTS. What should I do?

We recommend that you use a highlighter or pen to mark the VALIDATION INSERTS in the booklet as you read them. That way they will be easy for you to find when you need to answer questions about them.

15. What is a PERSONAL SECURITY QUESTION?

When you register for the course you will be asked several simple, yes/no questions (for instance, “Have you ever been to Europe?”), and we ask you these questions again when you START and STOP your course timer. Your answers must match the responses you gave when you registered. This is how we confirm your identity.

16. Is there a FINAL EXAM?

The Florida DHSMV requires you to pass a 50-question FINAL EXAM to receive your COMPLETION CERTIFICATE. You can take the “open-book” FINAL EXAM either at http://www.trafficschoolbook.com/ or with the paper form we send you. Don’t worry—80% is a passing score and you can refer to the booklet while you’re taking the test.

17. Do I have to pass the chapter quizzes to get my COMPLETION CERTIFICATE?

No, the quizzes are for review purposes only—you won’t be graded on them. However, taking the quizzes will help to prepare you for the FINAL EXAM.
